Janki and Bhavik – The Hyatt Princeton NJ

A little less than a year before their big day, Janki and Bhavik reached out to me to see if our team may be the right fit for their vision. When we first connect, they shared some of the vendors already on board and I knew it was going to be an amazing day. When you are working alongside vendors that have also have a high standard as well as a reputation for quality, the day is so much more of a pleasure – even more so when you have worked with them numerous times over the years. I listened closely to better understand the connection between Janki and Bhavik and after asking them a bunch of questions about preferences, I felt I could deliver.
We discussed ideas about an engagement shoot so we can get to know each other a bit better, and also give me some creative room to try a few things to see what really stuck to their own personal style. I didn’t love the locations they had in mind originally, so I voiced my opinion and asked them to consider a location that has some meaning to them. Somewhere that can pause a moment in their relationship. They had taken on an apartment in LIC and to me that marked a point in their relationship when they were committed to one another. It is a very special time in their lives and at some point they would move away from the city, I wanted this time to be something they can relive. I promise to make a blog post from their engagement session, it was awesome!
Once the engagement shoot photos were ready for viewing, I was so thrilled when they share how much they loved the set. We had a bunch of variety from natural candid, posed and a bunch of off camera flash work with more of an editorial feel. Now that I got a better sense of what they loved, I knew exactly how I wanted to approach their wedding day.
We started bright and early at the Hyatt in Princeton, New Jersey. I wanted prep to be more about the bit and pieces that went into putting together their outfits. This is something they spent time on and I felt a more editorial approach would be best for their style. I wanted more connection with family and friends, and not so much of the actual “getting ready” which I find to be kind of odd honestly. For their first look, we decided to hop over to Princeton University super early in the morning for a quick set of photos and it was beautiful. We were there so early in the morning the streets were empty, stores closed and it felt like we were the only ones around. Time is always a challenge at weddings and we hurried back to the venue to launch the baraat and wedding ceremony.
The baraat was nuts with some surprise performances, smoke grenades and a white horse with serious horsepower! Moving into the ceremony the room was full of love, D&S kept the room dimly lit with lighting to focus on the mandap. This created the ambiance for the ceremony, and in order to keep our work aligned with the couple’s vision we used grids on our lights to limit the spread while the subject can be easily separated visually in the scene. Their ceremony was emotional, it was great to see them express themselves naturally without reservation.
Prior to the reception I wanted a little bit of time for more styled photos of the bridal party. We have the time, why not go for it? We kept the darker mood of the room and with the help of D&S we were able to spot light the bridal party and maintain the actual ambiance resulting in photos with a ton of contrast and style. I love this type of work, it adds a little variety into the story of the day and makes for a conversation starting piece for the wall. The reception was full of dance performances and once the dance floor opened up to everyone it remained packed until the very last song.
